The search for Akron’s best burger

The Hamburger Guys met in May at Flip Side in Hudson. After being contacted by them on our Facebook page, we were pleased to be joined by the Mensa Hamburger Review Board. The dining room at Flip Side is relatively small, and we had to wait about 40 minutes for our table. Due to the small size of the dining room, we were unable to sit with the MENSA group, but at least we did have a chance to chat a little.
Flip Side has a pretty extensive beer list, including a good number of regularly changing craft beers on tap. They also feature milkshakes and, of course, burgers. The beef for the burgers comes from Ohio raised premium grass fed beef. The menu says that the buns for the burgers are a special recipe toasted brioche sesame seed bun that seem to perfectly fit the size of the 7 oz beef patty. As Don noted on his score sheet, this worked out so that he had a bite of bun with each bite of burger, and no excess bun remaining when he was finished. Phil liked the toasted bun, and said that it really held the burger well.
Burgers on the menu range from what one would expect, from the ‘Simplicity Burger’ with just lettuce and tomato or the ‘Say Cheese’, which is a basic cheeseburger, to more unique combinations, such as the ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ with prosciutto, fried egg, warm spinach, crispy Parmesan, and basil mayo. It was a tough decision, but I opted for the Smokey Burger. It is topped with smoked beef brisket, pickled jalapeno peppers, smoked Gouda cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce. Any burger with two additional meats added is my kind of burger! I have to say that it was hard for me to pick
out the flavor of the ground beef patty in combination with the other ingredients. However, this is not a criticism- all together, it really worked. The score sheets we use have a separate rating for just the beef all by itself without any toppings. As a rater, I failed this time because the burger as a whole was just too good to waste on trying just the beef. . In any case, it was a very good burger. The Gouda added a definite cheesiness that you could taste, and the brisket added a nice smoky taste and a little chewy texture without any one ingredient being too overpowering.
Each of us tried different sides; I had the triple cooked fries with salt and herbs. They were very good- nicely crispy and the herbs (seemed to be mostly rosemary) added a nice flavor. You can also get them with BBQ beef brisket, mushroom gravy, chili and cheese, or truffle oil. I’ve tried the truffle oil fries on previous visits, and while they were good, it was a little too much for me after a few bites. Amit tried the homemade potato chips with hot sauce and yogurt blue cheese dressing. The dressing was drizzled on top, with the fairly spicy hot sauce on the side. Phil had the sweet potato fries, and Don had the onion rings. The guys all liked the sides and Don said that the huge onion rings had a crispy breading on them, almost like panko.
All in all, the guys really liked the burgers at Flip Side. It may be slightly more expensive than some of the other places we’ve tried, but not prohibitively so, and the cost seems worth it for the quality ingredients. It’s definitely worth a visit!
