The search for Akron’s best burger
The Windsor Pub
By Don Johnson
On April 25th, the Akron-Canton Burgerguyz visited the Windsor Pub, 1322 E. Tallmadge Ave., Akron. The Windsor sports a decade’s old street sign advertising it as having the “Best Burgers on this EARTH”. A short time after we walked through the doors, we found out what it was that had been keeping its doors open for a long time.
With a selection of about 5 burgers on the menu (all around $6.75), we were evenly split. Half of us ordered the signature Windsor Burger; the other half ordered the “Rocket Burger”. I was one who tried the Rocket. Beside the beef, the Rocket is topped with salami, yellow pepper and provolone.
While others were ordering, I hadn’t noticed whether anyone was ordering their doneness preference. When it was my turn, I asked for mine to be cooked medium. The server politely explained that the pub only cooks and serves the burgers well done. Had this not been a burger excursion, I likely would have changed my order to something not a burger. The potato side choices included regular cut fries, curly fries and potato wedges. I asked the server, of those, which I should order. There was no hesitation as she said, “Curly.” Curly it was.
In a simple presentation, the burger arrived fully dressed, wearing its crown and stuck with a knife to keep everything in place. The size of the bun was a perfect fit for the patty. There was no surprise as to what I was going to bite into as I could see the layers of the toppings that sat between the lightly toasted bun and atop the handmade, slightly charred patty. The burger sat near the edge and curly fries were piled high to fill up the rest of the basket. Everything arrived fresh and hot. The aroma and visual appearance of the food made everybody really anxious to dig in.
After few bites, everybody agreed that burgers had a good taste. The texture of the patty was surprisingly good and moist considering that we could only get it cooked to well done. The amounts and quality of toppings on the Rocket were well balanced against the 12 oz. patty. The bun itself was rated about average as everybody agreed that a somewhat soggy bottom bun was the detractor. Of the potato sides, everybody agreed that the curly fries were by far the side to get. The potato wedge ranked second, the regular cut fries in last place.
The ACBG ranked the Windsor Pub at a solid 3.5. Don’t plan on getting your burger any way other than well done. Be sure to order the curly fries. The burger and side that you get for the price you pay definitely gets you big bang for the buck!
ACBG RATING: ☆☆☆½
